Town Hall Meeting

May 20th, 2003

On May 20th, 2003, the local democratic process continued as people packed Town Hall to hear presentations and ask questions about the future of the Georgia Pacific Mill Site. There were a number of excellent speakers.

Chuck Greenberg, local Habitat for Humanity advocate, spoke of the unique rezoning possibilities available for the site because of the Fort Bragg General Plan's special treatment of the parcel.

Carol Stephens and a team of Georgia Pacific representatives from Atlanta spoke about GP's process of dismantling the equipment still on the site. Carol introduced the Sedway Team, a consulting firm hired by GP to solicit community input and study the sites potential uses from various perspectives.

Bob Gearheart, Environmental Engineering Professsor at Humboldt State University, reviewed the Arcata Marsh Project and spoke about the possibility of duplicating such a water treatment process at the current water treatment facility located on the GP site. He emphasized the positive effects the marsh has had on the Arcata community, drawing thousands of tourists a year to view the bird life attracted to the marsh as it cleans up the effluents to a level surpassing typical mechanical wastewater treatment processes

Neil Peacock, Humboldt State University graduate student, spoke about the grasssroots democratic process (the object of his thesis) and how it is an important component in determining the future use for the GP property.

Linda Ruffing, head of Fort Bragg's Redevelopment Agency, talked about the process that the city will engage in as requests are made to change zoning for parcels on the GP Site, and how the General Plan will guide this process.

The next Town Hall meeting will be Sunday July 13th, from 10:00am-3:00pm at Fort Bragg Town Hall. It will be a macro-visioning meeting to create a proposed site plan for the GP property from the ideas generated by the community at previous town hall meetings. It will be facilitated by Patti Madigan and Shirley Freriks. Please bring and bag lunch and come participate in this grass roots democratic process to effect the future of the GP Mill Site!
